Semana Santa -

Writer's picture: Rachel BornsteinRachel Bornstein

From March 25 to April 1 is Holy Week in Spain, where the crowds can see processions taking place in which parades of floats, bands, and people are dressed up and walking down the streets. (This is also considered Spring Break, where schools are closed and international students organize trips: read my story about going to Barcelona)

In total, there are 32 processions, 4 each day. Processions are the main way of celebrating Easter in Spain, something the USA does not do, which made it an interesting thing to witness here.

The celebration of Semana Santa attract all 5 senses:

  • The sight of the floats of religious figures being carried by a large group of men underneath.

  • The smell of incense and flowers in the air

  • The feeling and taste of the typical Semana Santa bakery treats being sold strictly within the Semana Santa week in the pastelerías.

  • The sound of the band playing in the parades
