I had to spice up a typical stroll and take it to one of the top 10 cemeteries in the world— the Recoleta Cemetery!
This cemetery is no ordinary one— the burial sites are ABOVE ground with about 6,400 graves that hold famous and historical figures.
As you pass through the Recoleta neighborhood there is no way one could pass this gem without noticing it. Enclosed by tall brick walls, many statues of angels peak through the top. There is a strong aroma of incense floating in the air. Access to the cemetery is completely free, with tours available at certain hours if you want to know more of its history and special stories of some of the buried.
One of the most notable chambers to visit was that of Eva Perón, First Lady of President Juan Perón. She died in 1952, and Argentines will always remember her for her strong political role in women's rights and activism for the poor.
During my first visit here I REALLY imagined myself doing a cool photoshoot, so for my second visit my friend and I dressed to the nines and arrived at the gates at 7:30am (avoid the crowds). Unfortunately, the guards said it was prohibited to take photos WITHOUT formal permission from this administration who needed us to present a case for the purpose of the photoshoot. It seemed crazy to me, because everybody carries around their cameras on their phones and snaps so many selfies and photos inside the parameters. It was because my friend was extra dressy that we looked suspicious. It was not worth the trouble, but at least I do have good photos I took from the first visit!
