Dealing With the Tricky Questions

February 11, 2019

In our biweekly meetings amongst the CEA alumni ambassadors, we discussed how to answer common questions students ask that hinder their motivation to study abroad. Here are some of the questions and answers:

1. Studying abroad is too expensive

Studying abroad is definitely a lot of money,—but so is a semester's worth of intuition at your university— but there are plenty of sources available to students who want some financial assistance. At OU, there are tons of scholarships for studying/working abroad and financial aid. Also— join the Global Engagement Fellowship! One of the biggest benefits of this organization is the the privilege of receiving financial funds to study abroad twice. For my CEA program, there are always flight vouchers up to $500 as well as their own scholarships. Also, when you study abroad there will always be discounts for you to go again with the university/program you participated in!

2. Won't studying abroad interfere with my major requirements?

Many programs abroad offer many classes that could be tailored to equate for classes in your major, but you have to talk to the head of your major department to discuss what could possibly work. Also, knocking those gen-eds out of the way can be possible abroad as well— and more fun! From my experience, the workload was a lot more easy than in the United States, so take advantage of an easy A!

3. I don't speak (country)'s language [well/at all].

One of the biggest rewards of studying abroad in a country who speaks a different language from your own is the chance to learn it! People from all levels come to study abroad and you will see these various people in the same program as you. Luckily, there is a placement test. These tests should not be scary and you shouldn't worry about "impressing" the faculty— the tests are to help place you in the most appropriate level so you can grow while also being in a level that challenges you. You will meet many other students in the same level as you once you're placed, and it won't feel so intimidating later. The professors are also very good at teaching international students at various levels and want you to succeed!
