Arabic

Talent Show

December 2, 2016

One of many OU's special clubs that promotes immersion of culture, the Arabic Flagship program, hosted its annual Arabic Talent Show in the Thurman J. White Forum Building. Students, faculty, and non-residents of all ages were invited to attend and enjoy a wonderful dinner buffet provided by the program. No experience in Arabic was needed --- heck yes!

I grabbed a seat with my friends -- including another fellow GEF-- as well as finding myself at the exact same table as the spectacular Jaci herself (her husband was also with her so that was a bonus)! After some small conversation with the people around my table, I opened up the pamphlet that had the schedule of performers. There were performances of dance, filmography, poetry, and song; all of them were performed by students learning Arabic or members of the Arabic club! I do wish that the films provided English subtitles to the less fortunate that does not know a shred of Arabic, like myself...

While I listened to the poetry reciters at the podium, I did not understand what they were saying (they did provide an English translation after though!), but here is what really intrigued me: how much work each performer has put into their studies of Arabic language. I never really questioned how I sound to others when I speak Spanish, especially to those who have no shred of Spanish in them. When I was listening to the students speak in a language I am completely foreign to, I heard these beautiful sounds coming out of their mouths. I hope they feel how magical and powerful it feels to be able to communicate in a different way and therefore enhance their abilities to understand the world differently. In sum, though I could not understand what was being performed this night, I did get a reminder of the excitement that is to learn a language.
