This was my last meeting working with the Student Advisory Council for the Modern Language, Literature, and Linguistics department at OU before I go off abroad next semester! Today’s question involved ways we could integrate language students with the international community to practice languages.

The main thing that interested us was to get information on how we could transform the dormitories (Walker, Adams, Couch) into language dorms! There already exists the 3rd floor of Couch for international students, but that’s definitely not enough. We are going to ask about one floor being for Spanish students (learners and native speakers), one for French, and one for Italian, Latin, German, Russian, etc to just squish on the same floor. With the brand new residential colleges being built, it doesn’t hurt to ask how we can improve the environments of the freshman dorms!

The good news is that we successfully added an Intermediate Spanish course for MAJORS/MINORS only! This separates those who want to take the language course seriously and see its potential for their college goals, from those who just want to get credit for Gen Ed. I told my friend about it and she got enrolled into it after meeting with Shawn Gralla. I am so happy and can’t believe how possible change is for the language community here at OU.
